San Gimignano, Tuscany... July 4th

The patrician families who controlled San Gimignano built around 72 tower-houses (some as high as 50 m) as symbols of their wealth and their power. Although only 14 tower-houses have survived, San Gimignano maintains its medieval atmosphere, an unmistakable mark to the town.

Since the Renaissance it has been considered one of Italy's finest white wines. It was the first Italian wine to be awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in 1966 and in 1993 it was upgraded to Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG)
